Celebration of the 151st anniversary of Polish settlement in Tauranga

The Polish Community Trust of Tauranga, New Zealand, will celebrate the 151st anniversary of the first Polish arrival in New Zealand with a festival on Saturday, November 4th.

The festival will feature food, music, dance and other events showcasing Polish culture.

“The main aim of the festival is to promote Polish culture and let people in Tauranga know that we are part of this community,” says Polish Community Trust spokesperson Ewa Fern.

“We probably have over 100 Poles living in the city at the moment and although we are celebrating the 151st anniversary of New Zealand’s founding, our presence in New Zealand dates back to the travels of Captain James Cook.”

The Polish Community Trust also organizes other events in Tauranga such as concerts, art exhibitions and photography exhibitions. They also run a kindergarten for Polish children and children from other cultures.

“There’s so much more we can share with New Zealand as the Polish Community Trust,” says Finn.” We have students from Rotorua in our kindergarten and it’s a great opportunity to share our history and culture with the children.”

The Polish Arts Festival will be held on the first floor of Manawaroa at the University of Waikato. This year’s venue is larger than the historic village that hosted last year’s festival.

“We are looking forward to more people coming to enjoy our culture, which is why we are moving the venue to the first floor of Manawaroa Hall at the University of Waikato, in order to provide a great environment and more space for all visitors to experience Tauranga’s Polish flavor,” said Fearn.
