Glickenhaus Racing Bids Farewell After 2.5 Years, Exiting Grid by 2024

Rumors had been circulating for some time, and now James “Jim” Glickenhaus has confirmed it: Glickenhaus Racing will not be participating in the 2024 World Endurance Championship (WEC). The conclusion of the 2023 Monza 6 Hours marked the end of the team’s two-and-a-half-year journey in the WEC. Glickenhaus stated, “We won’t be entering because it’s not a viable option for us.”

Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus will now focus more on the production of road cars. In particular, 20 units of the 004 will have to be produced to enable GT3 homologation of the 004C.

This means that a return to the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring is also within the realm of possibility. Glickenhaus has skipped the Eifel classic this year because of its focus on the hypercar program: “At some point we will return to the Ring, because we want to market what we sell,” Glickenhaus said in an interview with “Autosport.”

In the WEC, things are not going ahead for well-known reasons. The Glickenhaus-007 would need an update after failing to win on its own in 2023: “We would need an Evo version of the car and would have to run two of them.” That would only be possible with external backers: “It’s not feasible for a privateer. The only possibility would be sponsorship or a customer who wants to run a program with our car.”

In the IMSA SportsCar Championship, a Glickenhaus start fails due to regulations. IMSA mandates 2,500 cars produced per year for manufacturers in the GTP class.

This brings the hypercar chapter to an end after two and a half years. From Portimão 2021 to Monza 2023, the Glickenhaus 007 took two pole positions and four podiums in the WEC. This includes third place at the 2022 24 Hours of Le Mans, the greatest success in Glickenhaus Racing’s hypercar program.

At the 6 Hours of Monza in 2022, turbo damage prevented a possible victory. Glickenhaus looks back on the event with pride: “We were a serious competitor and did extremely well for a privateer. We were on the podium in 2022 [at Le Mans] and left Porsche and Peugeot behind us that year. It doesn’t get any better than that. We were an important part of the championship when they needed us.”

The World Endurance Championship (WEC) endured a challenging period from 2018 to 2022, but Glickenhaus played a pivotal role in revitalizing the hypercar class. In 2021 and the first half of 2022, the 007 was the sole genuine hypercar contender alongside the Toyota GR010 Hybrid. However, since 2023, there has been a surge in manufacturer participation in the WEC, which is expected to continue. This has created a challenging environment for small-scale manufacturers. With Glickenhaus’ departure, the former Audi Team Joest is once again left without a manufacturer partnership.
